Mantra

"The word 'mantra' is derived from the root 'man', meaning to think. Mantra thus means a sacred thought or prayer to be repeated with full understanding of its meaning."

BKS Iyengar, Light on Yoga

"Tajjapas Tadartha Bhavananam."
To repeat it with reflection upon its meaning is an aid.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Book I, Sutra 28

The meaning of a mantram is “that which keeps the mind steady and produces the proper effect.” Its repetition is called Japa. If you repeat a mantra constantly a part of the mind will become linked to it. A Mantra is a good way of achieving your intention. ‘Strong and steady’, ‘sticky feet’, ‘breath easy’, ‘keep moving’, ‘let it be, whatever happens it’s OKAY’, ‘strength and courage’ are examples for climbers.
